Chemical Reactions

This following reactions represent the different types of chemical reactions, and some of the applications of chemical reactions.

Danger: Do not attempt to perform any chemical reaction without taking proper safety precautions. These demonstrations should be performed by qualified, trained personnel only.

Types of Chemical Reactions

Movie Run Time: 5:12

This video shows examples of several different types of chemical reactions - how many can you spot?

Sodium in Chlorine gas

Movie Run Time: 0:41

This simple composition reaction is very interesting in the sense that it combines a soft, reactive metal with a poisonous gas to produce simple table salt. You can see another very clear version of this reaction by clicking here.

Burning sulfur

Movie Run Time: 1:06

This video does a good job of showing how quickly sulphur will react in the presence of pure oxygen. You can read a full description of this experiment by clicking here.

Magnesium reacts with oxygen

Movie Run Time: 1:06

This video does a good job of showing how vigorously magneiusm will react in the presence of pure oxygen. You can read a full description of this experiment by clicking here.

Single Replacement Reaction - Nickel Reacts with Silver Nitrate - Balancing Lesson

Movie Run Time: 4:44

This reaction is short, but it comes with a complete lesson explaining how to balance the reaction.

Single Replacement Reaction - Copper Reacts with Silver Nitrate

Movie Run Time: 2:59 (no audio)

Look carefully to see how the colour of the solution changes, as well as what solid is produced.

Smoking Socks - Neutralization Reaction

Movie Run Time: 1:26

This video illustrates how neutralization forms water and a salt. You can read a full description of this experiment by clicking here.

Combustion Reaction - Methanol Bomb

Movie Run Time: 1:04

A combustion reaction is a reaction between a hydrocarbon and oxygen, in this case, methanol and oxygen.

Hydrogen Powered Car

Movie Run Time: 6:46

Decompose water into hydrogen using electricity, then burn hydrogen for energy with water for exhaust.
